Abstract
Investigating the potential for fiber laser modification of polylactic acid (PLA) surfaces to enhance its suitability for biomedical applications is the aim of this study. In order to achieve controlled fiber laser texturing of PLA samples created using fused deposition modeling (FDM), different geometrical patterns and processing parameters were utilized. The resulting surfaces were evaluated through Water contact angle measurements, surface morphology analysis using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), chemical characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Laser treatment dramatically affected the chemical and morphological properties, resulting in improved surface wettability and oxidation with no impact on bulk integrity. Overall, the findings confirm that fiber laser processing is an effective method for tailoring PLA surfaces to improve biocompatibility and potential for tissue engineering applications.
