Abstract
The threat from the earthquakes is major, both in terms of human life and the loss of environmental property. This study compares efforts in seismic behavior of multi-storey buildings on the basis of structural performance evaluated with response spectrum analysis (RSA). The main objectives here are to compare the storey shear and displacement values developed under seismic loading conditions for structures with and without fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) and to assess the influence of FVDs on building energy dissipation and reducing the seismic demand, and improving structural resilience. The analysis is performed on models of varying heights and configurations to capture the influence of building typology on seismic response. The dynamic analysis of the selected configuration of buildings has been done numerically using ETABS software in this current study. It is found that using FVDs reduces storey shear forces by a significant amount, thereby improving performance and stability of the building. It presents the benefits of FVDs in multi-storey buildings in seismically active regions and contributes to the understanding of the strategies to optimize the design toward improved safety and structural integrity.
